Cosumnes River College softball faced a formidable #3 West Valley College squad on February 13, delivering a pair of competitive games that highlighted the Hawks' resilience and skill.
In the first matchup, Cosumnes River came out strong with a 2–0 lead in the second inning, thanks to timely hitting from Imani Black and Mia Ballejos. Xochitl Atayde delivered a solid six-inning pitching effort, striking out seven while keeping the Hawks in contention. West Valley, however, mounted a late comeback to edge out the Hawks 3–2. Despite the loss, Cosumnes River showcased clutch hitting and smart baserunning that kept the game within reach until the final out.
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Hawks again battle from behind. After West Valley scored first in the third inning, Cosumnes River's offense sparked in the fifth, with Black doubling in a run and Ballejos driving in another to give the Hawks a 2–1 lead. West Valley tied the game in the fifth, and eventually took the lead in the the eigth resulting in a 3–2 loss to close the day.
While the Hawks came up just short in both contests, their performance against a top-ranked opponent highlighted their competitive depth, timely hitting, and standout pitching, leaving them poised for a strong remainder of the season.
