Spark Ignites Too Late as Hawks Unable to Climb Back from Early Deficit

Sacramento, CA — April 14, 2026

A late offensive spark wasn't enough to overcome an early hole as Cosumnes River College fell to No. 15 Sierra, 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon at home in Big 8 Conference action.

After three quiet innings on both sides, Sierra broke through in the fourth and seized momentum with a four-run frame, taking advantage of timely hits and aggressive baserunning to jump in front 4-0. The Wolverines added to their lead in the sixth, stringing together key extra-base hits to extend the margin to 7-0 before pushing one more across in the seventh.

Cosumnes River refused to go quietly, finally breaking through in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run push that brought life back into the dugout. The rally featured an RBI single and multiple pressure at-bats, but the comeback attempt ultimately came up short as Sierra closed it out.

Offensively, the Hawks were led by a strong day at the plate from Alexis Hoke, who finished 2-for-2 with a walk. Nina Najafizadeh added two hits, including an RBI double, while the late rally showed fight from a lineup that found its rhythm too late to erase the deficit.

In the circle, Xochitl Atayde worked all seven innings for Cosumnes River, battling through traffic while keeping the Hawks within striking distance early. Sierra's offense, however, capitalized on opportunities in the middle innings to pull away.

Cosumnes River will look to carry the energy from its late-game response into its next conference matchup Saturday on the road in a double header against Modesto Junior College.
