As another successful academic year comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been an extraordinary spring semester for Cosumnes River College Athletics. Our student-athletes, coaches, and staff continue to raise the standard of excellence, not only through competitive success, but through their commitment to academics, leadership, and representing our college with pride.

This semester brought historic milestones, individual honors, and unforgettable moments that showcase the strength of Hawk Athletics and the culture we continue to build together.

Softball Continues Historic Postseason Tradition

Our softball program once again demonstrated why it is one of the premier programs in California community college athletics. The Hawks battled through two challenging playoff rounds, defeating Cabrillo College and West Valley College before advancing to the 3C2A State Championship Tournament for the fifth time in program history.

On the state's biggest stage, CRC continued its remarkable postseason run with a thrilling 7-3 victory over San Diego Mesa College, scoring five runs in the seventh inning to defeat another higher-seeded opponent. Behind clutch performances from Alexis Hoke, Emma Misasi, Emily Azemar, and a complete-game effort from Kaylena Ogle, the Hawks capped off one of the most memorable postseason runs in school history.

Kristy Schroeder Matches Program Record

The success of our softball program is a direct reflection of Head Coach Kristy Schroeder's outstanding leadership. By leading the Hawks to the 2026 3C2A State Championship Tournament, Coach Schroeder tied the department record with her third state tournament appearance, previously accomplishing the feat in 2015 and 2024.

Since taking over the program in 2011, Coach Schroeder has built one of the most successful eras in CRC Athletics history, totaling 675 career victories, seven Super Regional appearances, and postseason berths in 11 seasons. Her consistency and dedication continue to set the standard for excellence within our department.

Beach Volleyball Freshmen Shine

Freshmen Emmerson Patterson and Jadyn Hoffman delivered an outstanding postseason performance by finishing as runners-up at the Big 8 Conference Pairs Championship. The duo battled through one of the conference's toughest fields to earn a berth in the NorCal Regional Championships.

Their success reflects the bright future of our beach volleyball program and demonstrates the competitive spirit that continues to define Hawk Athletics.

Hall of Fame Recognition for Coach Cesar Plasencia

Congratulations to Women's Soccer Head Coach Cesar Plasencia on his induction into the Mexican American Sports Association Hall of Fame.

A former Hawk student-athlete and Sacramento native, Coach Plasencia has dedicated his career to developing student-athletes and growing the game of soccer throughout our region. Since becoming head coach in 2004, he has guided CRC Women's Soccer to sustained success while making a lasting impact on countless student-athletes both on and off the field. This recognition is a well-deserved honor celebrating a lifetime of achievement, leadership, and service.

Investing in Student-Athlete Success

One of the highlights of the semester was celebrating our student-athletes during the annual Athletics Awards BBQ, where ten scholarships totaling $12,000 were awarded.

Recipients of the Excellence in Athletics Scholarship, Steve Krisiak Scholarship, and James Clark Memorial Scholarship exemplify what it means to be a Hawk through excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, and community service. Supporting our student-athletes beyond competition remains one of our department's highest priorities.

Scott Haynes Named Big 8 Assistant Coach of the Year

Baseball Assistant Coach Scott Haynes earned Big 8 Conference Assistant Coach of the Year honors following an incredible season of leadership.

With Head Coach Don Mico sidelined for much of the year, Coach Haynes helped guide the Hawks through the most difficult schedule in California, facing playoff-caliber opponents in 35 of 38 contests while earning a postseason berth. His commitment to developing student-athletes and maintaining the program's championship culture made him a deserving recipient of this prestigious conference recognition.

Men's Basketball Sets a New Standard

The 2025-26 Men's Basketball team produced the most successful season in program history, finishing 23-6 overall while setting a new program record for victories.

The Hawks posted a 13-3 conference record, earned a program-best .793 winning percentage, climbed as high as No. 8 in the state rankings, and finished the season ranked No. 11 in California. Even more impressive, five of the team's six losses came by a combined eight points, illustrating just how close this group was to an even more remarkable season.

This record-breaking campaign established a new benchmark for the future of CRC Men's Basketball.

Jeanne Calamar Honored with CCCADA Hall of Fame Induction

We also proudly celebrate former Assistant Athletic Director Jeanne Calamar, who was inducted into the California Community College Athletic Directors Association (CCCADA) Hall of Fame.

During more than three decades of service to Cosumnes River College, Jeanne helped shape the foundation of our athletics department as an adapted physical education instructor, the college's first women's basketball coach, and Assistant Athletic Director. Her influence extends across the state through decades of leadership and service within the Big 8 Conference and 3C2A.

Her Hall of Fame induction is a fitting recognition of a remarkable career dedicated to improving opportunities for student-athletes throughout California.

Every success this semester reinforces our commitment to providing an exceptional experience for every Hawk while continuing to build championship programs in competition, academics, and community engagement.
