Tony Champion begins his first season at Cosumnes River College after spending five seasons at Christian Brothers High School with Brian Chavez. At Christian Brothers, he was responsible for post player development, in-game statistics, and assisted in opponent scouting and strength and conditioning. Coach Champion helped guide the team to a 22-7 record (10-0 Capital Athletic League) in 2015 while capturing the league title. His guidance helped produce two All-League players and the league MVP for 2015.
Prior to his stint at Christian Brothers, Coach Tony spent his first varsity season coaching at Galt high school alongside Brian Chavez whom he followed to Christian Brothers. Champion has extensive basketball camp/clinic instruction with organizations such as: Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Stanford University Athletics.
Coach Tony is the Vice-President of the Sacramento Blue Soul Youth Basketball Program. The program was established in the Spring of 2012 for 4th-8th grade boys. Sacramento Blue Soul focuses on developing fundamental skills, knowledge of the game, and a competitive attitude.
Coach Tony is a graduate of Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, California where he contributed to three consecutive Hayward Area Athletic League titles. He continued on to attend CSU Sacramento as a student-athlete, where he completed his undergrad degree in Business Administration. He was a member of the All-Big Sky Conference All-Academic team in 2002. Coach Tony helped the Sacramento State Men’s program reach the Big Sky Conference Tournament in 2003 for the first time in the program’s history as a Division I institution. Champion went on to play professional basketball in the International Basketball League, Germany, and was drafted in the NBA’s Developmental League (D-League).
Coach Tony is passionate about using basketball as a tool to develop life lessons.
Tony currently resides in South Sacramento with his girlfriend Liz, and her daughter Ariana. They are currently expecting their first child together, due in December.`
